FAM president Ahmed Thariq (Tom) has announced the launch of Atoll Futsal championship, the sport’s very first nationwide tournament organized by the association.

Making the announcement on a social media post, Tom promised the championships are going to be “an opportunity for players from every island to showcase their talent at the national level.

According to Tom, the futsal championship will follow the four region framework by which the regional football leagues are being played.

This means that futsal players from Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Noonu, Raa, Baa and Lhaviyani, will compete in the same ‘north’ league.

The central league is going to stretch south from Kaafu, down to Dhaalu. South league will be played by atolls between Thaa and Addu.

The current FAM administration have previously decided to make heavy investments in futsal – the sport most popular among the Maldivian public.

FAM will spend over three-quarters of the MVR 2.3 million annual futsal budget on this decentralized championship. Most of the remainder will be invested mostly on the inaugural national men’s and women’s futsal leagues.
