The Maldives will host the Asian Carrom Championship, confirmed the Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation, Abdhulla Rafiu.
The International Carrom Federation ICF has given the green light for Maldives to host the tournament, which had been on pause for over a decade.
The Carrom Association of Maldives (CAM) had since invited about a dozen countries – mostly from South Asia and the Middle East – to take part in the 5-day tournament scheduled to start on the 27th of April, informed the general secretary of CAM Hussain Raushan. The games are expected to be played from 09:00 in the morning until at least 19:00 in the evening.
The Maldives team – ranked 3rd in the world – have begun practice and is going to be mentored and coached by a former world champion, who is expected to join the training camp by the end of Ramadan.
Over a hundred delegates from participating nations are expected to attend the tournament, with arrivals from April 26th onwards.
The tournament venue, Maafannu Social Center, will exhibit a VIP lounge, a Media room for journalists, and a catering service for all delegates. The Social Center Hall will see twenty-four carrom boards set up for the tournament, and the organizing of the tournament will meet the standards of ICF, guaranteed Mister Raushan.
The tournament venue will also be used for the Maldives team’s practice sessions. Fans of carrom are welcome to attend and watch the games, together with relatives and friends of the Maldives players.
