From awe-inspiring moments to jaw-dropping frames. From the heartbreakingly painful defeats to the big victories for club and country, here is a retrospective look at the past 12 months through the viewfinder of our photographers.

1. Eclipsed – The Rise of a Futsal Superstar

Aflaaz Ahmed had already earned the title of ‘Most Promising Player in Maldives’ at the GFC. But in the Club Maldives Cup 2025, Aflaaz became the hero of Road Recreation Club’s glorious campaign, winning player of the tournament – the youngest ever to do so.

“This shot was pure instinct”, says Sidibari photographer Abdhullah Iyan Ilyas, who captured the moment after Aflaaz scored against STO in the final. “But I also wanted to make sure the floodlight was eclipsed by his head”. Iyan says he is glad Aflaaz’s face was lit up by the neon scoreboard.

An invincible run up to the final ends in heartbreak as Maldives fall just short of winning the CAVA Women’s Cup. Kyrgyzstan made a comeback to defend the trophy. Prior to the final, Maldives were unbeaten in all four games, including the semis – winning twelve out of thirteen sets.
