Burunu Shikaaru, the first of three challenges in the Maldives National Bodyboarding League, has kicked off its 7th edition this morning.

The annual bodyboarding challenge, which takes place at ‘Varunulaa Raalhugan’du’ surf break on the eastern coast of Male’ City, is its seventh edition and will feature 23 bodyboarders this year.

The initial heats in the open category were held today. This year’s Burunu Shikaaru will see 21 participants compete in the open category, nine in the drop-knee category, and eight in the junior category. Women’s categories were not included in this edition.

With the first call at 10:00 am, all four heats of rounds one and two have been held on the first day.

The best results from day one were delivered by Aamin Umar Moosa from heat 1 of round 2. Aamin’s first wave (6.83 pts) and fourth wave (5.03 pts) earned him the top spot in the heat with 11.86 points, which is 2.2 points above Ashraf Hassan (9.66 pts).

The second-best results from day one of the open category were delivered by Ali Kushruwan in heat 3 of round 2. Ayya caught his two best waves in his first (4.17 pts) and third (5.50 pts) attempts, scoring 9.67 points.

Burunu Shikaaru is the first of three challenges in the annual National Bodyboarding League of Maldives.

The second challenge of the league will take place in Fuvahmulah City in August. The league will return to Varunulaa Raalhugan’du for its final event – National Ban’du Filaa Challenge – in September.
