Ahmed Maaidh Mohamed has set a new Maldivian national record in the men’s 10m air rifle event at the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan.

Maaidh scored 614.5 points in today’s qualification round at the General Shooting Gallery, surpassing the previous national record of 605.5 set by fellow national team shooter Ibrahim Shifan at the 2025 Asian Shooting Championships in Bangkok.

Umar Mohamed Nasheed, who was competing in the same event, had earlier raised the national record to 610.2 points before Maaidh finished his round with an even higher score.

Shifan also competed today, finishing with 597.3 points.

China’s Sheng Lihao, one of the leading shooters in the world, topped the event with 635.4 points.

A total of 47 shooters from different countries competed in the men’s 10m air rifle event.

The national records in women’s 10m air rifle event was also broken in the Asian Games, in yesterday’s event

Aishath Eesha Shaheed set a new national record in the women’s 10m air rifle event, scoring 624.1 points.

The Maldivian shooting team will return to competition tomorrow for the 10m air rifle mixed team event.

The shooting events are taking place at the Aichi Prefectural General Shooting Gallery: Japan’s largest comprehensive shooting facilities. Set on a vast site, it features both a clay shooting range and rifle and pistol shooting ranges. Shooting (Rifle, Pistol, and Shot gun) will be held at the renovated shooting ranges for this Games.

In shooting, athletes compete by firing at targets from a set distance, with points awarded according to how close each shot is to the centre. In the 10m air rifle event, competitors shoot from 10 metres away using an air rifle.
