The participant islands of the newly organized FAM Regional Leagues have been determined, as the qualifier stages are just one game away from conclusion.
Following this evening’s draw against Hoandhehdhoo in the South Regional qualifiers, Feydhoo of Addu Atoll qualified for the final in Zone 2 of the region. While Feydhoo is set to play against Gadhdhoo of Huvadhu Atoll in the finals, they are the fourth and final team to qualify for the South Regional League. Feydhoo also becomes the only team to secure a spot without winning a game in the qualifiers, having drawn in both of the games.
The only game yet to play across all three regional qualifiers is the final between Gadhdhoo and Feydhoo. The two will later join the South Regional League alongside Gan and Kunahandhoo – two islands from Laamu.
The three regions from withing the Atolls will see twelve of the best footballing islands battle in a double round robin league within their regional leagues, with each island playing three home games and three away games.
The North Region, which consists of seven southernmost atolls, will feature Dhidhdhoo, Eydhafushi, Manadhoo and Hanimaadhoo. Haa Alifu champions Dhidhdhoo had come out on top in their respective zone in the qualifiers, while Manadhoo, the capital of Noonu, edged past Eydhafushi in the final of zone two last night.
The Central League, which spans seven atolls from Kaafu to Dhaalu, will see two islands from Dhaalu Atoll; Kudahuvadhoo and Meedhoo. Huraa, the champions of Kaafu, had won their zone qualifiers without losing a game. The zone hosts Mahibadhoo had also qualified for the Central League, but were defeated at home by Huraa in the final played yesterday evening.
The South, Central and North Leagues, along with the ongoing Male’ League (2nd Division) – are competing within the four-region framework introduced by the new FAM administration.
The champions from each regional league will move on to the DPL Qualification stage. They will compete in the playoffs with the two clubs who finished seventh and eighth from the outgoing DPL season; TC Sports Club and Club Green Streets.
While the top four teams from the DPL qualifiers will be promoted for the 2026/2027 season of the DPL, the bottom two will be relegated back to their respective regional leagues.
Editor’s note: This article has been amended to correct the names of two DPL clubs set to compete in the playoffs.
