In a significant development for regional sports, Pakistan has taken a major step forward by giving the green light to host the 14th South Asian Games.
The decision comes after extensive discussions between the Pakistan Olympic Committee (POC) and the government, addressing various concerns that arose during the 2022 South Asian Olympic Council meeting, leading to the postponement of the originally scheduled 2023 event.
One of the primary issues under consideration was the selection of appropriate venues for the games and securing the necessary funding in collaboration with the government. The pivotal question revolved around identifying the central city to serve as the hub for this sporting extravaganza.
After thorough deliberations, Lahore has emerged as the chosen city to host the majority of the games. However, to ensure inclusivity and accessibility for participants and spectators alike, satellite events are also planned in Saikloat, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Islamabad.
Initial concerns regarding Islamabad’s suitability as the central hub were alleviated following recent discussions, with Lahore now established as the preferred choice. With this decision finalized, the Pakistani government has expedited its efforts to ensure that all necessary arrangements are in place for a seamless and successful event.
Although the original plan aimed for an October 2023 event, Pakistan has proposed a revised timeline, suggesting a potential rescheduling to March 2024. However, the official announcement of the event date will be made only once all logistical and operational details have been finalized.
Currently, Pakistan is targeting the end of 2024 or the early months of 2025 for the games. However, in the event of any unforeseen challenges, Bangladesh has expressed readiness to step in as an alternative host.
With prior experience in hosting the South Asian Games in 1998 and 2004, Pakistan brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the table. The last editions of the games were held in Kathmandu in 2019 and India in 2016, both of which encountered scheduling delays before their eventual success.
As preparations for the 14th South Asian Games gain momentum, excitement is building for yet another memorable chapter in the region’s sporting history. Anticipation runs high as athletes from across South Asia prepare to converge in Pakistan for a celebration of sportsmanship and camaraderie.
