The Maldives National Carrom Team has departed to San Francisco, California, to compete in the 6th Carrom World Cup.
Of the 12 players representing the Maldives, four are to compete in the men’s events, four in the women’s, and four will play in the Swiss League.
The four players in the men’s team are Ismail Azmeen, Hassan Nazim, Mohamed Munthasir and Ibrahim Hujaan Ali. The women’s team comprises of Aminath Vidhaadh, Aminath Nahufa, Aishath Fainaz and Fathmath Rayana. The players representing Maldives in the Swiss League are Aminath Shuba Adam, Khathim Khaleel, Yamaan Abdul Jaleel and Ibrahim Lifaau Amir.
The women’s national carrom team had won bronze medal in South Korea at the Carrom World Cup 2018, while Shuba was named among the top 8 female players. The men’s team vied for the third place in that World Cup, but ultimately lost to France.
The Maldives National Carrom Team had achieved recent success at the continental level; at the Asian Carrom Championship, held in Male’ this past April. Azmeen and Nazim had won silver, and Nahufa and Vidhaadh made it to the semifinals in their respective doubles events.
Asian Carrom Championship also marked the first-time in two decades that Maldives made it to a Team Events’ finals at the international stage. The women’s team that day had achieved bronze in team event.
