The Maldives National Athletics Championships 2025 have entered their third and final day, with more than 200 of the country’s best track-and-field athletes competing in Malé.
One of the most remarkable athletes in the women’s events, 20-year-old Aishath Shaim Azeez of Customs Recreation Club has now won three individual gold medals, repeating the treble she achieved last year, and added another national record to her name.
At the javelin throw event of Day 1, Shaim won gold with a distance of 27.12 m. Her throw was more than a metre ahead of teammate Lauha Hussain, who placed second with 25.94 m.
On Thursday evening, she added a second gold in the women’s high jump, clearing 1.48 m. The next best result was 1.23 m by Shuaa Ahmed Rishfan of Track and Field Association.
Shaim’s third victory came in the women’s long jump on Friday. With a leap of 5.24 m, she finished 14 centimetres ahead of runner-up Aishath Shabaa Saleem. The jump also set a new national record, improving on the one Shaim herself set last year. It was the third time in her career she has broken the Maldivian long jump record, having first surpassed the 5-metre mark in 2023.
By the end of the second day, Shaim had completed all her events and defended all three of her individual titles from 2024.
