The government of Maldives has mandated a standardized monthly allowance of 7,000 rufiyaa for every athlete and official representing national teams in their respective sports, according to a circular published by the Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation this Thursday.
“Following the president’s pledge, as per the resolution by the national sports council, it has been decided that the allowance allocated to athletes, officials, and para athletes will be increased to 7000.00 rufiyaa, starting from the month of May, 2025” reads the circular which was addressed to all of the sports associations in Maldives
The Sports Ministry instructed the associations to “allocate the allowance to an amount of 7,000 in the salary sheets starting from 15th September 2025”. The Ministry also informed that it is in the process of making sure athletes receive the outstanding amount of the increased salary starting from May, 2025.
The circular was notably shared by the ministry just a day after local media ‘Sun Mv’ published an article which highlighted concerns by some of the sports associations regarding the delay in payments by the government. Certain associations have reportedly not received “any sign of salary payment in months”, according to an unnamed source via Sun Mv.
The increase of monthly allowance to athletes was one of the pledges in this year’s presidential address to the nation. National athletes were promised an increase of the allowance to an undisclosed amount at the time, among the other urban development projects within this year’s budget.
