The Maldives National Football team has won the South Asian Super Cup trophy despite a draw in the second game against Sri Lanka this evening.

Today’s game ended in a 1-1 stalemate. Just as in the previous game, it was Naiz Hassan who broke the deadlock this game, scoring on the 67th minute. Naiz was in the right place at the right time to shove in the loose ball after Ibrahim Mahudhee’s header bounced off the crossbar.

Maldives lost the lead in stoppage time; Sri Lanka’s attempt at a comeback resulted in a goal on the 90+3rd minute.

Maldives had defeated Sri Lanka 3-0 in the first game on Saturday, when Naiz scored the opener. The first fixture also saw an assist from Naiz.

The South Asian Super Cup was played from 6th to 9th September and featured the Maldives and Sri Lanka. Both games were played away at Colombo’s Racecourse International Stadium. The two games were played under the direction of the newly appointed head coach, Mohamed Shiyaz.

Winning the first game and tying the second on away turf, this is the first time in seven years that the Maldives has won an international trophy.
