Club Green Streets are in dire straits after gaining just two points in four games of the DPL qualifiers.
As they kicked off the fourth round of fixtures this evening against Dhidhdhoo, Green had to fight back twice to earn a 2-2 draw against North Region champions.
The draw means Green Streets is facing a difficult path with just one match remaining for them in the qualification tournament.
Three goals were seen in this evening’s first half, with Dhidhdhoo in front at halftime. Dhidhdhoo scored twice in corner kicks. Although their foreign player Saint Danjuma Gumbari scored the opener after fifteen minutes, Green Streets equalized via Mahmoud El Sayed. Dhidhdhoo’s took back the lead in the 32nd minute, as Hussain Rasheed headed following a corner kick.
After a goalless forty five minutes in the normal time of second half, it was their striker Obaida Kadhim Ahmed who rescued Green Streets in the 91st minute of the game, equalizing to make it 2-2.
With two draws and two losses, Green Streets have lost grip on their survival. Even if they defeat South Region champions Gadhdhoo Sports Club in the final fixture, qualification would still depend on results from other matches.; with only one fixture left, they can reach a maximum of five points.
Four of the champions from the regional leagues are competing in the single-round qualification tournament, with the top four teams earning places in the 2026/2027 Dhivehi Premier League.
Malé Region champions Biss Buru Sports Club, TC Sports Club and Dhidhdhoo all sit on seven points, with Biss Buru and TC having tow games to spare.
As of now, South League champions Gadhdhoo from the South Huvadhu atoll occupy fourth place on three points from three matches, while Central Region champions Huraa Community Club have one point from three games.
The qualification campaign continues tonight when leaders Biss Buru face Huraa in another match that could have a significant impact on the battle for the four Premier League spots.
Tonight’s game between table leaders Biss Buru against K.Huraa could be historic, as it might confirm Biss Buru’s qualification to DPL for the very first time.
