Maldives Basketball Association (MBA) has stood by its decision to suspend Talons Basketball Club.

In a letter addressed to the club, MBA reiterated the grounds on which Talons BC was suspended a year ago.

Why was Talons BC Suspended?

On December 1st  2023, Talons BC won the 16th National Basketball League Division 2 after breaking the tie with Royals BC, winning 70-64 in the league-deciding game.

Talons was promoted to the 1st Division of NBL which tipped off the season on January 17th 2024, but the club had not participated in the league. Therefore the MBA had suspended Talons BC from its tournaments for two years, effective January 17th 2024.

The association cited 7.2.3 of the NBL regulations, which states that the MBA has the right to suspend a club from the association’s tournaments for a period of two years if, for any reason, the club decides not to play in the 1st division after being promoted. As such, the suspension should begin from the date when the next NBL tips off.

Addressing Talons BC’s appeal for lenience on the suspension, MBA stated the importance of respecting the Articles of Association, and that the organizing committee of MBA had decided to stand by its decision. It further highlighted the association’s commitment to ensuring obedience from MBA’s member clubs to its regulations.
