All games of the round of sixteen unfolded at the ring last night, as Eid Baibalaa Challenge 1446 narrows down to the top eight teams of the year.
The first team to qualify for the quarterfinals was TFT—The Futsal Town, which defeated BG New Generation in two straight but heavily contested games. The first game’s score was 9-13, and the second game ended in a 6-6 draw, which was enough for TFT to qualify. BG had defeated Kuda Henveyru United in the first stage of the tournament. The debutants TFT were the ones to knock out the defending champions Buru Sports in the first stage.
TFT will have to face TC Sports Club in tonight’s quarterfinal game. TC Sports Club defeated Club Wanted last night in two straight games; the results were 1-12 and 5-8.
TFT’s second team, Wakaruge, were knocked out by LT Sports Club last night. LT won the games by 5-7 and 7-11. Tonight’s quarterfinals will feature LT Sports versus Lorenzo Sports Club, who knocked out TC Fraternity last night with scores of 15-3 and 6-5.
Last year’s runner-ups Club Kaasinjee will face the ‘Kings of Baibalaa’ BG Sports in tonight’s quarterfinal. Kaasinjee defeated Club SDZ last night, and BG Sports defeated Teenage Juniors. BG had refused to let Teenage Juniors score a single point in the first round, ending it in 19-0, while the second round finished in 7-4.
Club Zeppo, who had been seeded into the round of sixteen, appeared for the first time last night, and it was not going to be their final night in the ring; Zeppo managed to defeat Club Teenage, one of the biggest names in Baibalaa.
The surprisingly good Zeppo will face Kuda Henveyru Lions in tonight’s final game of the quarterfinals. KH Lions played Janavaree Magu Sports Club last night and won it in two straight games.
In fact, all of last night’s games were decided without the need for a tiebreaker; a third round.
Tonight’s quarterfinal games will start at 08:30pm and are scheduled as follows:
Match 1 – TFT vs TC Sports Club
Match 2 – LT Sports Club vs Lorenzo Sports Club
Match 3 – Club Kaasinjee vs BG Sports Club
Match 4 – Kuda Henveyru vs Zeppo
Eid Baibalaa Challenge 1446 kicked off on Tuesday, April 1, and featured 29 teams. This year’s challenge is exhibited at the newly built state-of-the-art ring at Central Park, Hulhumale’.
