Zeek Ashraf and Yoosuf Naik Vajeeh have both renewed the junior national records in their respective heats at the U18 Asian Athletics Championship in Dammam, Saudi Arabia.
In the high jump heat, Naik jumped over the bar at 1.84 metres, breaking the junior (u20) national high jump record that he had previously broken in February. Before that, the national record had been unbroken for 18 years.
Earlier in the U18 Asian Athletics Championship, Aishath Zeek Ashraf competed in the 1500m race, crossing the finish line in 05:26.66 and thus renewing the national record in the heat.
Although our national athletes return home without a medal, they pushed their limits and set a new standard for themselves and the country. All five athletes have surpassed their personal best results in Dammam.
Sprinter Ahunaf Rayyan Fahumy has been impressive in the 100m and 200m heats. In the 200m race, Rayyan reached the finish line in 22.92 seconds, a new personal-best result for him. Female sprinters Aminath Luhya Ahmed and Rayn Mohamed have each set a new benchmark for themselves in Dammam, breaking their previous personal best results.
The sixth edition of Asian U18 Athletics Championship reached its conclusion on Friday night, as India came out on top with the most number of medals; Indian athletes have won one gold, five silver and five bronze medals.
