The Football Association of Maldives has decided to organize a ‘colorful celebration’ to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Maldivian football.

The new executive committee of FAM convened for the first time yesterday, making significant decisions to facilitate a smooth transition. As mandated by its statutes, FAM will create a ‘diamond jubilee committee’. FAM says an invitation to nominate candidates for the committee will be sent to the member clubs.

The year 1950 is widely recognized as the starting point of football administration in the Maldives. It was the year when a football office was created for the first time. Thirty-four years later, in 1984, Maldives became a member of FIFA.

Details on how the celebrations will unfold is yet to be known. The deadline for application for the committee is set for 03 August.

Among other decisions made yesterday, the FAM had also invited clubs to nominate candidates for the ‘Futsal and Beach Soccer Committee’; another mandatory committee under the new statutes.

Upon completion of these responsibilities, FAM will select the coaching staff and officials for the national team, given that international tournaments (such as the SAFF Championship) are approaching.
