Maziya Sports and Recreation have started their Cup Winners’ Cup campaign with a 2-1 victory over their newfound archrivals, Odi Sports Club.
The Green Boys, who had kicked off the season with the Charity Shield glory over New Radiant, have proven their resilience despite the depletion of their squad through the transfer window.
Both of Maziya’s goals involved Ahmed Aiham. The opener saw Aiham take on Odi defenders on the counter-attack, before cutting the ball through for Nassah Ibrahim Nasir to finish it off on the 18th minute.
Odi fought hard to equalize within ten minutes, as Muzdhan Hassan headed in an outswinger from Ahuzam Rasheed.
The sides remained level till the 77th minute, when Aiham scored the winner with a diagonal lowball across the face of the goal.
Maziya join the Cup Winners’s Cup as the Dhivehi Premier League Champions. They had won all but two competitions last season. Besides the DPL, Maziya had also won the Charity Shield, FAM League, Cup, The U19 Championship, and the Women’s League. The only competitions they could not win last season were FA Cup and the President’s Cup.
