Maldivian swimmer Mohamed Aan Hussain, 22, has improved the men’s 50m backstroke national record in the long pool at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland.
Aan competed in Heat 2 of the Backstroke event and completed the race in 29.18 seconds, just 1.09 seconds behind the heat winner, Will Sellars of the Cayman Islands.
40 swimmers competed in the men’s 50m Backstroke event at the Tollcross Swimming Centre in Glasgow. The top 16 finishers across five heats qualified for the semifinals. Aan had been just 2.7 seconds short of qualifying.
The 50 men’s long course backstroke record, previously held by Aan, had remained at 29.51 seconds for over two years. The backstroke’s national record at the short pool as well is currently held by Aan.
