Yasin Ahmed Nashid has won Round 2 by a huge margin as the surfing events at the 20th Asian Games resumed this morning at Long Beach in Aichi, Japan.

The surfing events began on Friday morning at Long Beach in Tahara, a coastal city on the Pacific coast east of Aichi. This is the first time surfing has been included in the Asian Games, with 48 surfers from 16 countries competing across the men’s and women’s events.

All four Maldivian surfers were in action today.

Competing in Heat 4, the 15-year-old scored 8.13 points to finish well clear of Afghanistan’s Afridun Amu, who scored 2.14 points.

Yasin had earlier scored a total of 8.50 points, (4.40 and 4.10) in the opening round.

In Heat 6 of the men’s shortboard Round 2, Kayan Abdullah Areef scored 5.67 points. His opponent, Thailand’s Nattakorn Sae-iu, finished with 11.20 points.

Kayan had scored 5.43 points in Heat 2 of Round 1, with his counting waves combining for 2.83 and 2.60. He advanced from the opening round as one of the highest-scoring surfers among those finishing third.

In the women’s shortboard Round 2, Aiminath Thaanis Shiran scored 1.30 points in Heat 6, while Mariyam Raahil Naseem scored 1.20 points in Heat 2.

Malaysia’s Mona Rashida Abdulrashid scored 2.60 points in Thaanis’ heat, while South Korea’s Nala Lee scored 8.20 points in Raahil’s heat.

The round of sixteen heats are scheduled for tomorrow morning.
