Amna Thazkiya Mirsaadh has set a new women’s long course national record in the 50m backstroke, her third national record in a month.
The fourteen-year-old clocked 32.77 seconds in the women’s 100m backstroke event at the ongoing 10th World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships 2025 in Otopeni, Romania.
Finishing 3rd in her heat, Thazkiya missed the top spot and a spot in the semifinals by just 01.01 seconds. She tapped the wall just behind the heat-winner Fiji’s Waqainabete, and Farah Fares from Palestine.
Thazkiya’s new record time improves on the previous record of 34.18 seconds, set by Ulya Shaig in Melbourne last year. That swim by Ulya itself had been a 0.14-second improvement on the record held by Aishath Saushan (34.32 seconds) from the 2023 Indian Ocean Island Games in Madagascar.
Two years since the IOIG, the 50m backstroke NR has now been shortened by 1.55 seconds.
Thazkiya’s latest result follows two other records she broke just weeks ago, at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. One of which is another backstroke record, in the 100m. Thazkiya’s 1:13.49 finish had been an outstanding 4.68-second improvement on the stroke’s NR, previously held by Hamna Ahmed.
Amna went on to break another record in Singapore; the 100 freestyle, reclaiming the title from Ulya Shaig with a 0.28-second improvement.
