Maldives U-16 national tennis team has finished in third place at the Junior Billie Jean King Cup Pre-Qualification round of the Asia/Oceania region.
Team Maldives – consisting of Manha Mohamed Ali, Keyara Usama Ali and Naba Nishan – earned the podium finish after defeating Myanmar 2-0 in today’s third-place playoff.
The national U16 tennis team had an incredible start to the qualifiers, with two clean sweeps in day one and day two. Naba, Manha and Keyara all three won their respective games against Brunei on the opening day, and against Oman on day two.
Against Brunei opponents, Keyara won her match 6-0, 6,1, while Naba and Manha defeated their respective opponents by 6-1, 6-0.
In the face-off against Oman on day two, Manha delivered the exact score-line, winning with 6-1, 6-0. Naba and Keyara had tougher games but managed to overcome their opponents with 6-1, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-4 in their respective games against the Omanis.
Maldives qualified for the semifinals but were defeated yesterday at the hands of the hosts Sri Lanka, who went on to play the final against Singapore.
