Yasin Ahmed Nashid and Yoosuf Kayan Hamdhan Zaki have qualified for the U18 Boys’ quarterfinals at the 4th Asian Surfing Championship.
Among 33 surfers from across Asia, the two Maldivian prodigies have delivered some of the finest results of the tournament so far.
Competing in the second heat of the junior round three this morning, Kayan Zaki, also known as Kai, scored an impressive 6.73 points. Kai ended up second in the heat, behind Chinese surfer Shulou Jiang who scored 12.67. Kayan escaped the round three with a fine margin of just 0.16 points separating him from the third-placed surfer in the heat; Ramil Arromchuen of Thailand.
Fourteen-year-old Yasin Ahmed Nashid took on the sixth and final heat of the round, surfing five waves in total. Yasin scored best from his first (4.83) and fifth (4.47) waves. With a combined score of 9.30, Yasin grabbed the top spot in the heat with just 0.23 points between him and Lucas Santiago from Malaysia.
Junior surfing team hits the waves, Kayan and Yasin score 10+ points each
Having qualified for the quarterfinals of the 4th Asian Championships, Yasin and Kayan have stood out as two of the top eight junior surfers in Asia at the moment. The two are also the only surviving surfers of the Maldives national team at the championship.
