Two plots of land have been allocated for the construction of a netball and futsal indoor complex.
A plot the size of 54,992 square-feet is allocated for the construction of an indoor futsal complex north of the Hulhumale’ Phase Two shelter Tower 1, while an area of 50,142 square-feet of land was given for the indoor netball complex from in front of the Ghaazee School in Phase One.
Both are five-pitch indoor complexes.
For the land allocation, the agreement was signed between the HDC, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Sports. HDC Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed signed the agreement on behalf of the company at a ceremony held at the Phase Two shelter area yesterday evening. The Finance Ministry has been represented by the Minister Mohamed Shafeeg. Minister Abdulla Rafiu signed on behalf of the Ministry of Sports.
At the ceremony, Rafiu said the two complexes are the largest multi-purpose complexes to be built in Maldives’ sports history. He also stated that the two buildings will revolutionize sports in the country.
Fazul said the company will always support the development of sports as it is one of the most important issues for the youth.
Futsal, which is an indoor sport, is popular in Maldives but the tournaments are held on mini turf grounds, which does not meet FIFA’s standards.
Seven years ago, official netball tournaments were held outdoors on empty ground. but later used for the social center’s indoor competitions. The clubs still use the outdoors for practice.
