Kurendhoo secured a spot in the second round of the Ninety-Plus Gold Cup after defeating K.Guraidhoo by 1-0 in the Group C game played yesterday evening.
Yesterday’s win for Kurendhoo meant K.Huraa had been knocked out of the tournament. Huraa earned three points in three games, while Kurendhoo and Guraidhoo earned four each. Group C has proved to be one of the most contentious of the tournament given that just two points separate bottom-placed Huraa from Addu City, who are on top with five points. None of the four teams in the group managed to win more than one game.
Guraidhoo had threatened to score early on in yesterday’s game, two of their strikes being saved by Kurendhoo’s foreign goalkeeper Sujan Pereira. The game’s only goal came from Kurendhoo’s Belgian midfielder Jordy Bart in the second half. Jordy scored from the six-yard box after being set up by a cross from the right wing.
Eight teams have now secured a spot in the second round of the Gold Cup: Addu City, Guraidhoo, Kurendhoo, Fuvahmulah City, Eydhafushi, Male’ City, Alifushi and Thimarafushi.
