Game Week 1 of the Fantasy Premier League 25/26 season is underway. As of this morning, a total of 12,510 Maldivians have already created an FPL team to manage for the next nine months.
Over the past few seasons, thousands more Maldivians than have joined in the fun of managing their own FPL teams across the 38-game weeks. Last season saw a record 15,000-plus FPL managers from the Maldives.
As a general trend, a few thousand more teams are expected to join the Maldives leaderboard over the next game weeks. As of this morning, two Manchester United fans – Shiyan Habeeb (Man Utd) and Shariq Mohamed (Kinder Mbuemo) are sitting on top of the Maldives leaderboard.
A Manchester United fan, Mohamed Rafaah, had won the Maldives League in the 2023/2024 season. Last season’s winner of Maldives turned out to be Aik Abdhulla Rifau, a 22-year-old Arsenal fan.
With a total of 2652 points from 38 game weeks, Aik’s team Nexus FC ended up with a seventeen-point edge over the second-placed team ‘Hawk Tuanzebe’, managed by Mohamed Udhayyu. The runner-up and his team ‘Hawk Tuanzebe’ spent most of last season in the top ten of the Maldives leaderboard. Aik and Nexus FC on the other hand, spring boarded to the very top in the last few game weeks.
Such uncertainty is part of what makes the game so obsessive among the youth. Local businesses and brands have picked up the hype, creating FPL mini leagues with hefty grand prizes, with some offering awards for monthly winners.
