Maziya Sports and Recreation opened game week fourteen of DPL with a 3-0 win over Victory Sports Club.
With four games left to play in the season, the defending champions are still unbeaten – they have won thirteen of the fourteen games, and need just five more points to seal the league title.
After a goal-less first half, Maziya scored three goals in the span of fifteen minutes. The first one came ten minutes into the second half. Maziya’s right back, Hussain Sifaau Yoosuf, made a long run deep into the Victory penalty area to cut in a low cross across the face of the goal for Ahmed Aiham to tap in the opener.
A Hamza Mohamed penalty kick in the 63rd minute allowed Maziya to widen the lead, after Hassan Nazeem was brought down inside the area.
Five minutes later, a free kick by Hamza was shoved off by the Victory Goalkeeper Kiran Kumar, only for substitute Ilan Imran to fire it in from inside the six-yard box. Anticipating a rebound ball, Ilan had made a run from in front of the wall, finding himself unmarked at the near post.
This was Victory SC’s first defeat in six games. They are currently in fifth place with 20 points, with no concern of relegation and no hopes of winning the title either.
Maziya needs just two wins in the next four games. A win and two draws (five points) would also guarantee themselves a defense of the DPL title.
Notably, the Green Boys are not just unbeaten in this season, they have not lost a league game since 2022. The last time they lost a DPL game was against Club Eagles four years ago.
