The Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation is preparing to develop a racing track, drift arena, and a stadium for surfing and bodyboarding in the Greater Male’ area.
The ministry has signed an MOU with Hong Kong’s Rotime Engineering and Technology for the development of a surfing and bodyboarding stadium.
An MOU was signed between the ministry and HDC today to provide land for the racing and drift arena.
Racing and drifting are popular sports among the youth. Although there is no racing track, racing competitions have been held on the streets of Hulhumale’ in the past. The racing community has also shared its concerns with previous governments about the lack of a track.
“The youth have been asking for this for a long time. Hopefully this year the path has been paved,” Minister Rafiu said.
The minister said the main purpose of a bodyboarding and surfing stadium is to solve the difficulties encountered while holding international competitions.
The International Bodyboarding Corporation’s (IBC) World Tour included “Visit Maldives Pro” for the first time in the IBC tour calendar in 2022, and it was also included and hosted at Varunula Raalhugandu, Male’ last year as well.
In addition to this, K. Thulusdhoo hosted the Asian Surfing Championship last year.
The minister also stated that the concept and design of the racing and drift arena, as well as the surfing and bodyboarding stadium, have been completed in consultation with the four associations.
