Swimmers Hamna Ahmed and Mohamed Aan Hussain have added new national records to their names at the 127th Hungary National Championships this week, continuing their impressive streaks on the international stage.

Hamna recently broke two long-course national records in Hungary — the 100m and 200m breaststroke — both previously held by Aishath Sajina.

In the 200m heat, Hamna clocked 03:03.69, shaving nearly a second off Sajina’s 03:04.53 mark from the 2019 FINA World Championships in South Korea.

In the 100m backstroke, Hamna finished in 01:23.38, bettering Sajina’s record of 01:24.65 from the 2016 South Asian Aquatics Championship by 1.27 seconds. This marks the end of a nine-year run for Sajina’s record.

These achievements add to Hamna’s growing list of national records. She broke the 100m short course breaststroke record at last year’s Hajos Alfred Kupa with a time of 01:23.76, and followed up in November by smashing the 200m short course breaststroke national record in Hungary’s Short Track Nationals, finishing in 03:00.53 — nearly nine seconds faster than the previous record, also held by Sajina.

Hamna is also the national record holder in the 200m long course backstroke, a title she first earned at the 2023 World Aquatics Championship in Fukuoka, Japan, and later improved in Malaysia last April.

Aan Claims Butterfly Title in Short Course

Meanwhile, Mohamed Aan Hussain broke the national short course record in the 50m butterfly, clocking 00:26.77 and surpassing the previous mark held by Mohamed Rihan Shiham.

This brings Aan’s total to seven national records, including 50m, 100m, and 200m Freestyle in the long track. He also holds 100m Individual Medley record, claimed last November from Mubal Azzam during Hungary’s Short Track Nationals

In the 100m short course freestyle, Aan made headlines last year by breaking a record that had stood unchallenged for eight years. He clocked 00:54.89 at Hungary’s Buda Cup, bettering Nishwan Ibrahim’s 00:56.25 set at the 2016 FINA World Championships in Canada.

Aan also reclaimed the 50m butterfly short course national record late last year in Hungary. He had initially set the record during the 2023 Indian Ocean Island Games in Madagascar but briefly lost it to Rihan before reclaiming it.
