The Volleyball Association is under scrutiny for its electoral approach, receiving criticism from the Sports Commissioner, Mohamed Tholaal.

The election was initially scheduled to be held at the VAM’s ‘Extra Ordinary Congress’ on the 11th of March.

The Congress, held in the absence of observers from the Sports Council, the Olympic Committee and the Office of the Sports Commissioner, was concluded with the decision to postpone the election till next Tuesday, the 19th of March.

The Office of the Commissioner of Sports – the parental institution of VAM – had previously sent a letter to the association urging them not to proceed with the election until they meet with and reach certain demands of the Olympic Committee and the Sports Council.

While clubs that are entitled to participate in, and observe the Congress – most of which are in favour of the presidential candidate Mohamed Latheef – were present, some clubs seeking representation at the Congress were denied the opportunity.

VAM claims that clubs ‘Sports Club City and ‘Malsa Sports Club’ were snubbed because of incomplete registrations.

Nine new EXCO positions are available under the new operating policy. Under the amended policy, six Vice Presidents – up from the previous two – will be working under the new president.

Mohamed Latheef – who previously served as President of VAM – is the sole contender for the replacement of Mohamed Ranesh. The interim president will serve the association at least until the full term of the current EXCO ends in April 2025.
