The Volleyball Association of Maldives has disclosed the names of candidates taking part in the upcoming election of the association, overstepping Sports Commissioner Mohamed Tholaal’s advice not to proceed with the election before certain agreements were reached.
The Commissioner’s instruction is for VAM’s EXCO to meet with the Olympic Committee and the Sports Council before taking such initiatives, according to the letter sent from the Commissioner to the Volleyball Association.
The president’s seat at VAM has been left vacant since the departure of former chief Mohamed Ranesh, who was elected in April 2021. VAM is obliged to replace any positions on the EXCO within 30 days, per its new operating policy.
The association plans to elect four new vice presidents, four additional EXCO members, and the interim president, in their ‘Extraordinary Congress’ scheduled to be held tomorrow night.
While today marks the deadline for application, just one candidate has applied for each position. This means the candidates, including the president, could be inaugurated without calling for a vote.
In addition, on the 3rd of this March VAM put out an announcement in search of an auditor. The association’s audit for the past four years must be disclosed, and today is the final day for prospects to submit a fiscal estimate.
Should the Congress proceed with electing the candidates, the VAM’s new EXCO will see the return of former president Mohamed Latheef as replacement for Ranesh, with Mohamed Saajid (former coach of National Team) as Senior Vice President, Ali Latheef as VP of Volleyball section, Izzath Waheed as administrative VP, and, as the Female VP, Aaidha Abdul Hakeem.
The new personnel at the EXCO will be elected for the remaining twelve months of the electoral term, which ends in April 2025.
