The Maldives Surfing Association (MSA) has announced that Gaafu Dhaalu Gaddhoo’s Kalhegalekoda, which was meant to kick off the 2025 Dhivehi Surf League, will not be taking place.

The first of the three events of Dhivehi Surf League, originally planned for February 5–8, was cancelled by the hosting partner Gaafu Dhaalu Gaddhoo Council, citing financial constraints.

In a statement released on January 17, the MSA expressed its gratitude to the Gaddhoo Council for its contribution to the surfing community, affirming the association’s support, and shared hopes for the event’s return in 2026, contingent upon improved financial conditions. The association also acknowledged the council’s vital role in advancing the Dhivehi Surf League and the sport’s development in the Maldives.

Gadhdhoo’s Kalhegalekodaa had been one of the three surfing events in DSL for the past three years. Last year’s Junior Kalhegalekoda winner was Kayan Abdhullah Areef.

The final of last year’s Kalhegalekodaa saw two of Gadhdhoo’s native surfers – Najah Mohamed (Kabo) and Hood Ahmed (Hoobz) compete for the title. Kabo came out on top as the winner, scoring 7.33 and 5.73 points in his second and fourth waves respectively.

Gadhdhoo, an island from Southern Huvadhu Atoll, has been renowned for its Tiger Stripes surf spot, where Kalhegalekodaa had previously been held.

Despite this year’s setback, the MSA remains determined to maintain the Dhivehi Surf League’s momentum. Work is already underway to finalize the location and schedule for this season’s first event. The association reaffirmed its dedication to promoting surfing and providing opportunities for athletes throughout the Maldives
