The Volleyball Association of Maldives is prepared to hold its annual extraordinary congress tonight at the Social Centre.
The congress is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. tonight. At that time, VAM plans to elect 14 EXCO members — including five vice presidents — for the next term. The five VPs will consist of a Senior Vice President, Vice President, Vice President of Volleyball, Vice President of Beach Volleyball, Administrative Vice President and a Female Vice President.
In addition to the newly elected president of VAM, the remaining seats will include a treasurer and six Organizing Committee members, with one seat reserved for a female member.
VAM’s presidency is presently held by Mohamed Latheef, after Mohamed Ranesh, the elected President of the outgoing EXCO, had resigned on first day of March of last year. Latheef had been confirmed to secure the seat prior to last year’s congress, as there were no other candidates. In addition to the interim-president, A senior VP, section VP, administrative VP and a female VP were also elected for the rest of the term, all of whom, just as the interim-president, securing their seats without the need for a ballot box.
Latheef had previously served as President of VAM from 2016 to 2019. Latheef and the board members at the time lost their positions after Heena Ahmed Saleem – the Sports Commissioner at the time – dissolved the VAM board amid an inquiry into the association.
In late 2023, VAM had been listed among associations set to be dissolved because it had not held an annual Congress for the previous three years. President Ranesh abruptly held an annual congress on November 3rd. The VAM board created new resolutions for its AoA, and reshaped its electoral procedure in that congress, while attempting to hold an extraordinary congress as well.
However, the acting Sports Commissioner at the time – Aishath Samah – decided that the VAM’s November 2023 congress had violated the Associations Act (03/2022).
