Athletics Association of Maldives has announced that Hassan Saaid — the fastest track-and-field athlete in the country — has qualified for the World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing 25.

The world Athletics Indoor Championship is a three-day event, scheduled from 21-23 March. More than 500 athletes from some 120 nations are expected to compete across 26 events this year.

Saaid secured the spot by winning the 60-metre time trial, crossing the finish line just 0.07 seconds quicker than the second-placed Ibadhullah Adam: Saaid clocked 6.90 seconds to dash the 60 metre.

This would be the third World Athletics Indoors in which Saaid competes. He had represented Maldives in Serbia in 2022, and the Championship’s latest edition held in Glasgow, Scotland last year.

In addition to the global tracks, Saaid had twice represented Maldives on the Asian Athletics Championships. This includes the Asian Athletics Championships 2016 in Doha – in which Saaid broke the national 60m dash record, within 6.75 seconds – and last year’s championship in Tehran.
