New Radiant Sports Club has confirmed its congress is scheduled for the 20th of this November.
While the club has announced the congress date, two candidates have expressed their interest in running for the position of Chairman.
The two candidates, Ali Waheed – also known in the football community as Ballack – and Ahmed Mubeen, both are former Members of the Parliament. In addition, Ali Waheed had previously served as chairman of New Radiant SC.
Ahmed Mubeen, the managing director of Regional Airports Company, had shared his intent to run for the position on a social media post: “By the Will of Allah (SWT), this journey that I am embarking on will be to lift (New Radiant) the Maldivian football club with the most number of fans up to the heights it once used to be in, and to put a smile on the face of supporters”.
Ali Waheed had been open about his intention on returning to lead the club, sharing a post back when the chairman’s position became vacant, claiming his return (to the club) is going to be robust.
Amid the turmoil in 2019 surrounding New Radiant players not being paid their wages, the club was suspended having rebelled against former FAM president Bassam.
After tremendous efforts of Wasif and other loyalists of the club, New Radiant’s suspension was brought to an end in 2022.
NRSC returned to the football field in 2023, playing in the second division and fighting to climb up to promotion, only to be defeated by Buru SC in the semifinals.
The club suffered a similar defeat in the semifinals of 2024, having clashed with their historic archrivals Victory Sports Club.
While the club is preparing for the congress, to be held on Wednesday of next week, the chairman position has been vacant for months, after the resignation of Ahmed Wasif.
