The Armenian Youth Open Badminton Championship began yesterday, with promising Maldivian shuttler Laiba securing wins in both her singles and doubles games.

One of the tournaments of the Badminton Europe calendar year, the Armenian Youth Open is held from this Friday to Sunday at Yerevan’s Tennis and Badminton Sports School.

Competing in the U13 Girls’ singles category, Laiba comfortably won the match by 21-7, 21-16 against Armenian player Marina Asilbekyan.

Together with her partner Emmelia Sofocleous, Laiba won the doubles game by 21-9, 21-12. Emmelia and Laiba are the top-seeded pair in the U13 girls’ main draw.

Laiba and her mixed doubles teammate Erik Eloyan had received a bye in the round of thirty-two and will compete in the round of sixteen this morning.
